Missouri Grown Cabernet Franc by Blumenhof Winery

2013 Cabernet Franc

The Wine:

Produced from Cabernet Franc grapes grown entirely in our own vineyard. The crop was thinned by hand to about 2 tons per acre in order to concentrate flavor and color.  Aged for 10 months in French oak barrels.  SILVER MEDAL winner at the 2015 Indy International Wine Competition. [no residual sugar]

The Grape:

Cabernet Franc: (ka-bur-nay FRAHNC) one of the world’s oldest wine-making grapes, Cabernet Franc is a parent of the renowned Cabernet Sauvignon grape.  Cabernet Franc thrives in cooler climates such as the Loire Valley in France, and is widely planted in Virginia.  Blumenhof Winery grows less than an acre of this grape.

We planted Cabernet Franc in 2009, and produced our first wine from those vines in 2011.  Then in 2012, we had a late frost which eliminated most of the crop and forcing less desirable secondary fruit to form – we pressed on.  2013 was a fantastic year for Cabernet Franc – there was no winter damage, a long growing season, and plenty of fruit.  Near veraison (when the berries change from green to blue) we went through each vine and eliminated the clusters that were ripening slowly to make sure all of the grapes were ripe at harvest.
